Abstract

The reliable protection of DC grids is still a challenge, mainly because of the fast operation required for interrupting the high current faults that could severely damage the system. Accordingly, HVDC circuit breakers must be further developed. On the other hand, superconducting fault current limiters reduce fault currents and are able to adapt the performance of the system to the maximum breaking capacity of circuit breakers. In the present paper, a superconducting DC circuit breaker is proposed considering three circuit breaker technologies. Those technologies are compared and their performance is analysed on a multiterminal HVDC system. The paper highlights the benefits that the superconducting fault current limiter provides to the circuit breaker operation.
