Abstract

In this paper, we describe an idea of building hardware based method for multiview glassless 3D display as an alternative option, and may partially overcome 5 drawbacks of current multiview display technologies: 1) restricted seat locations of viewers, and 2) limited view depth, therefore, 3) limited number of viewers for given display resolution and brightness, or 4) need display screen with higher resolution for same image quality of currently glass-based 3D display, which leads 5) greatly reduced brightness due to excessive time-multiplexing if for very large number of viewers. The proposed method is based on “eye space” concept for densest viewable points (or called eye zones) in viewing zone, and consists of a shutter screen at front of display screen with hardware and procedures for dynamically control pupil windows on shutter screen. A driving circuit unit called address driver is proposed, which enables the implementation of switching on or off all shutter pupil windows of all right eyes or all left eyes of all viewers simultaneously for given display pixel. The modelling and analysis are carried out to confirm the working feasibility.
