Abstract

SUPER MARKET volume has not only held its own in the face of the numerous war problems, but has shown consistent increase; this, despite manpower and merchandise shortages, gas rationing, price ceilings, food rationing and the other attendant problems brought on by the war. According to a recent survey made by Super Market Merchandising, since 1941, volume has constantly risen each year in the Super Market industry, with I943 the greatest in the historyof the Super Market industry. In order to appraise this gain, the survey covered 45 super market operations, controlling some 460 stores in 22 statesoperations so reflective of the country's various sections as to offer a realistic picture. The purpose of this survey was to show the position of these operators in dollar volume and in net profit, and to present the comparative figures for 1941, I942 and I943. The results are given in Tables I and II as follows:
