Abstract

Greenwich data for proper motions of the components of sunspot groups are analysed. We have found that only 4% of the 408 examined sunspot groups do not show systematic proper motions of the components at the beginning of their life. Interpreting proper motions as the results of ascending sub-photospheric magnetic flux tubes, information on characteristics of the tubes have been deduced. The influence of proper motions on the evaluation of the sunspot rotation rates is discussed.
