Abstract
Sunshine and Nuclear Power The use of nuclear power for electricity production continues to expand around the world. According to World Nuclear Association databases, 64 new nuclear reactors are under active construction today. These reactors, once operational, are expected to add over 61 gigawatts to the global electrical supply – and others are in earlier phases of planning and licensing. Most of these reactors under construction today are in nations with mature nuclear power programs, and in nations that subscribe to international norms for assuring transparency about their program’s peaceful intentions. However, the global expansion of nuclear power is exposing weaknesses in the international nuclear security framework that needs to be addressed.
