Abstract
To the Editor: Sunscreens are widely used photoprotective agents and regulated as over-the-counter drugs by the US Food and Drug Administration.1 Valisure, an independent pharmaceutical testing company, recently found elevated levels of benzene, a known human carcinogen of all exposure routes, in 78 batches of sunscreen and after-sun care products, with some containing nearly 3 times the US Food and Drug Administration concentration limit (2 parts per million).2,3 Benzene exposure is strongly linked to hematologic malignancies.
