Abstract

Cotton/Kelvar® 29 aramid 2 blend canvas fabrics were prepared from both Dref-3 friction-spun and conventional ring-spun yarns. The Dref-3 yarns were spun with cotton/Kevlar staple-blend cores and 100% cotton wrapping fibers, whereas the ring-spun yarns were an intimate blend. The fabrics were treated with a special finish containing titanium dioxide and a fluorocarbon water repellent Properties of the fabrics before and after accelerated weathering exposure in an Atlas Weatherometer were compared. The special finish improved the durability of both the Dref and ring spun fabrics to prolonged weathering. Strength retention, however, was best for the fabrics made from the Dref yarns.
