Abstract

Conflicts of interest: none declared. Sir, Sunbed use is now recognized as being a risk factor for skin cancers including melanoma and many authorities now believe that sunbed use by young people should be restricted.1 2–3 The development of coin‐operated sunbed parlours throughout the U.K. means that many sunbed tanning establishments are unmanned and therefore there is little supervision or advice on the dangers of frequent ultraviolet exposure. The Cancer Reform Strategy published in 20074 raised concerns regarding sunbed use and the recently published All Party Parliamentary Group report on skin cancer has recommended that sunbed use in those under 18 years old be made illegal.5 In Scotland, the Public Health Bill, 2008, prohibits the use of sunbeds by persons under 18 years of age and also the sale or hire of sunbeds to persons under 18 years. There are currently no regulations in place for England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) will shortly be releasing a report on sunbed use which will raise important issues on the safety of sunbeds.
