Abstract

Maori and Pacific people have a 3 to 5 fold risk developing end Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) compared to New Zealand Europeans with the major aetiology being type 2 diabetes (1). In a NZ community based prevalence study, Pacific people had a 2.56 fold higher risk of CKD, controlling for diabetes (2). Likewise Pacific people (predominantly Samoan) in NZ with a family history of ESKD have an increased risk of nephropathy independent of diabetes (3). This cross sectional pilot study aimed to identify the prevalence of proteinuria in a Samoan community in absence of diabetes as a way of identifying potential risk for progressive CKD.
