Abstract

Once-daily dosing of a potassium (K+) binder may offer enhanced convenience to patients with hyperkalemia (HK) and simplify separation of K+ binders from other oral medications. In the TOURMALINE study, patiromer, a non-absorbed K+-binding polymer that uses calcium as the counter exchange ion, was shown to be effective administered once daily without or with food. In this post-hoc analysis, we assessed the efficacy and safety of once-daily patiromer by baseline severity of HK (mild HK, serum K+ <5.5 mEq/L; moderate/severe HK, serum K+ ≥5.5 mEq/L) for the without and with food randomized treatment groups combined.
