Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with the majority of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Trauma is a common cause of AKI, yet little is known about the incidence, risk factors or patient outcomes associated with trauma-related-AKI in LMICs. Though more than 12,000 patients are evaluated for traumatic injuries annually at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), a large referral hospital in the sub-Saharan Africa country Malawi, the incidence of AKI amongst Malawian trauma patients is unknown.
