Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects up to 10% of the Australian population, with a significant increase in the incidence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in the last 20 years1. Current projections estimate the number of ESKD patients receiving treatment via transplantation or dialysis to rise from approximately 20,000 in 2011 to at least 29,000 in 20201. There is limited data that quantifies the number of ESKD patients with advanced care directives (ACD) despite considerable morbidity and mortality1-2.
