Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) can offer patients more independence and flexibility compared with haemodialysis (HD). However, the PD regimen can be demanding as patients must manage the daily technical responsibilities of PD and minimise the risk of complications such as infection. This treatment burden can impair patients’ quality of life, ability to self-manage, treatment satisfaction and outcomes. Patient empowerment enables patients and fosters their capacity for self-management and a sense of control over their health.
