Abstract

Two hundred and twenty scientists and technicians from 36 nations will be involved in the 4‐month‐long summer Monsoon Experiment (Monex). This part of an international study of the atmosphere's most massive weather phenomenon is being undertaken with two objectives, according to J. P. Kuettner, director of the U.S. Monex Project Office. The first is to understand the mechanism of the monsoons so that they can be modeled mathematically for prediction purposes. The second objective is to determine the interactions of the monsoons with the global atmospheric circulation system.
