Abstract

Social trends in Latin America during the 1990s have beem influenced by a variety of factors, including the institutional reforms undertaken in most of the countries of the region, the resumption of economic growth followed - in recent years-by a slowdown in economic activity, changes in the labour market, the upswing in social expenditure that has come in the wake of the spending cuts made in the 1980s, and the different agendas drawn up by the Governments in their efforts to deal with the social lags inherited from the preceding decade as well as the challenges posed by the advent of new development models.
