Abstract

After a summary of the previous paper session the panel discussion focused on existing problems of automation in the aviation industry. Shortcomings of existing design processes and philosophies have been identified and emphasis on a task-oriented approach in order to complement the technology-oriented approach for future developments has been expressed by the panelists. In a comparison between the US and Europe the state of the European Human Factors discipline has been evaluated and steps are suggested to enhance and coordinate European know-how and efforts to an andequate level of efficiency. As a conclusion the need for a common platform to address Human Factors issues in aviation in an interdisciplinary way has been expressed.
