Abstract

During 1971 NATO’S Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS) increased Jhe rhythm of its pilot study activity in the following fields: Air Pollution, Coastal Water Pollution, Inland Water Pollution, Road Safety, Disaster Assistance, and Advanced Health Care. Using the “pilot country” approach, each of these subjects was primarily the responsibility of a single NATO member country, which together with co-pilot and other participating countries carried out the work. Two plenary sessions of the CCMS were held in April and November attended by high-level officials from capitals, which afforded continued opportunity in round-table discussions to review national environmental plans and policies. Numerous pilot study and project groups convened on the foregoing subjects, with expert representation from NATO and non-NATO countries as well as a number of international organizations. In addition, work also proceeded in CCMS on three other pilot studies, the Quality of Working Life, Environment and Regional Planning and Scientific Knowledge and Decision Making. A major Conference on Cities was jointly sponsored by NATO/CCMS in Indianapolis, Indiana, in May, the results of which were intended to lead to further CCMS pilot project activity. The subject of the misuse of drugs continued to be discussed within that forum with a view to ameliorating the world-wide drug problem. Finally, the CCMS Fellowship Programme was put into effect.
