Abstract

Measurements have been made on the cross section for scattering of electrons by O 16 as a function of excitation energy for various experimental conditions. From the data, experimental values are computed for different sum rules which are then compared with theoretical predictions. The sum rules evaluated are 1. (i) the integrated cross section at fixed incident energy and scattering angle, 2. (ii) the integrated cross section and the energy weighted sum rule at fixed momentum transfer, 3. (iii) the integrated inelastic cross section at fixed momentum transfer and fixed scattering angle. The results demonstrate the effects of the Pauli exclusion principle and of charge exchange forces on the sum rules.
