Abstract

A brief kinematic analysis demonstrates one cause of sum and difference tones to be the interaction of sound waves with rotating blade rows. The sum tones are shown, paradoxically, to be always closer to cut-off than the incident wave, whereas the difference tones can be at a higher cut-off ratio.
