Abstract

δ 34S Data have been obtained for rainwater, soils and the needles of Pinus radiata growing in a New Zealand geothermal region. It appears that most of the sulphur in P. radiata needles was soil-derived with a possible contribution from geothermal droplet sulphate in areas close to geothermal boreholes. Hydrogen sulphide contributions to plant nutrient sulphur in this geothermal region appear to be largely via the soil. The 34S-content of the soils of the geothermal region are depleted with respect to most other New Zealand soils probably because of their volcanic origin.
