Abstract

Abstract Two types of hot cracks in low carbon steel weld metal, namely, solidification cracks and ductility-dip cracks have been verified using hot cracking tests and hot ductility tests. The formation temperature ranges of the two types of hot cracks are 1480–1450°C, and 1100–850°C, respectively. The surface morphology of ductility-dip cracks is intergranular fracture with dimple zones and smooth facets containing voids which are associated with (Mn, Fe)S inclusions. This type of cracking can be prevented by increasing the manganese content in the weld metal.
