Abstract

• Poly(melamine) sulphonate enhances the oxygen reduction activity of Pt catalysts. • The enhancement of the activity persists even after a deterioration test at 79 °C. • The melamine polymer suppresses the degradation of Pt nanoparticles. Poly(melamine) sulphonate (Poly-MS) adsorbed on the surface of Pt nanoparticles enhanced the activity of Pt/C in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This enhancement persisted even after an accelerated deterioration test (ADT) at 79 °C. Analysis of the particle size distribution using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly showed that Poly-MS enhanced the stability of the Pt nanoparticles, enabling them to withstand the conditions of the ADT. These findings were supported by CO stripping voltammetry analysis.
