“Sulla Questione Universitaria”: Filippo Pacini and medical-anatomical education in the Nineteenth century

Abstract

The paper focuses on Filippo Pacini ‘s remarks and considerations about the reform of medical and surgical university schools in Italy in the Nineteenth century that he illustrated in his brief work “Sulla Questione Universitaria” . He published It in 1878, while he was full professor at the medical and surgical school at the University of Florence. Pacini outlines the state and the development of the medical and anatomical studies in Italy in relationship with the European context, describing his personal experience as medical student, university lecturer and researcher. All his considerations involves political and scientific institutions through a brilliant, lively and modern dialogue. Pacini’s considerations about medical and anatomical schools are still relevant today, to understand the value and the meaning of medical schools for the development of the science and of a nation.
