Sulfur ylide complexes of palladium, preparation of organometallic compounds by the phase transfer catalysis technique

Abstract

Reactions of [S(O)(CH 3) 3]I in NaOH solutions of various concentrations with Pd(PPh 3) 2Cl 2 in CHCl 3 in the presence of n-Bu 4NI produced [Pd(PPh 3) 2-{(CH 2) 2S(O)(CH 3)}]I · 1 2 CHCl 3, ( 1), and Pd(PPh 3)(I)[(CH 2) 2S(O)(CH 3)] · 1 2 CHCl 3 ( 2) with good yields. Without the phase transfer catalyst, no ylide complexes were formed. Compounds 1,2, and the ionic compounds cis-[Pd(PPh 3) 2 {(CH 2)S(O)(CH 3) 2} 2]I 2 ( 3) were also prepared with low yields by the reaction of the ylide (CH 2)S(O)(CH 3) 2 with Pd(PPh 3) 2Cl 2 in dry THF under an inert atmosphere. The advantages of phase transfer technique are discussed.
