Abstract

The interaction of I2 with the nickel dithiolate Ni-1* yields a charge-transfer complex of I2 in which the nucleophilic metal thiolate donates electron density into the I2 σ* LUMO. In the solid-state structure, the I−I bond is elongated from that of free I2 (3.03 A vs 2.72 A), and conductance measurements indicate that the I−I bond is heterolytically cleaved in solution. The new molecular iodine adduct is compared to I2 adducts of PPh3 and R2S.
