Abstract

The effect of platinum group metals (Pd, Pt, Rh) on the activity and sulfur resistance of the Cu–Ni-oxide composites over yttrium-stabilized zirconia in the reaction of methane oxidation by oxygen has been studied. The promoting effect of platinum metals depends on the composition of the reaction mixture (the stoichiometry of partial or deep oxidation, the presence of sulfur dioxide). The enhancement of activity in the deep oxidation of methane, which is greatest for the palladium doped sample, is related to the oxidative–reductive properties of the composites in accordance with TPR-H2 data. The sulfur resistance of Pd-doped Cu–Ni oxide composite is attributed to the formation of an adsorbed (PdO·SO2) complex, capable of methane oxidation.
