Abstract

A systematic sulfur isotope (δ 34S) study of Triassic marine sulfates in south China has been conducted and 190 δ 34 S-values have been obtained. These data indicate: (1) Sulfur isotope ratios of upper Lower Triassic and lower Middle Triassic marine sulfates of south China are relatively uniform: δ 34S-values range from +24.7 to +32.5‰ and the average is ∼+28‰. In contrast, δ 34 S-values of the middle Middle Triassic in China are between + 14.5 and +23.2‰, the average is ∼+17.5‰.(2) Our data, in combination with the data published by previous investigators, confirm that the appearance of remarkably heavy δ 34S-values (∼+28‰) in the upper Lower Triassic and lower Middle Triassic is a world-wide phenomenon.(3) Based on the data provided in the present paper, the upper Lower Triassic and lower Middle Triassic parts of the Phanerozoic sulfur isotope age curve for sulfates are modified.
