Sulfur derivatives of ephedrine catalyze the 1,2-addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde in high enantiomeric excess. Disulfides and cyclic sulfide derivatives of these compounds serve the purpose very well, and the actual catalytically active species, containing zinc, has been extracted from the reaction mixture.
