Abstract

Abstract Attempts were made to check two diseases of trout by oral administration of sulfamerazine. One of these diseases, furunculosis, is caused by Bacterium salmonicida; the other, ulcer disease, is probably a bacterial infection, but the causative organism is not yet known. Brook, brown, and lake trout infected with furunculosis, and brook trout infected with ulcer disease were the subjects of the experiments. Sulfamerazine was administered in the feed at the rate of 3 grams per pound of feed. The evidence indicates that both diseases can be checked by the drug. Optimum dosage is not yet known, however, and under actual hatchery conditions the cures may be only partial and temporary. The selection of strains of fish resistant to these two diseases is still considered desirable.
