Abstract

There are wide variety of material used as medical implants. The major demands for these material arose when alternate material for repair of bone was in search. Though wide variety of materials such as stainless steels, Cobalt, Titanium, Tantalum are in use and available, there is always a special significance and rationale in choosing Magnesium alloys since these alloys are having material properties close to that of a bone and are present sparingly in the body. Titanium is preferred over the other materials like Cobalt and stainless steels owing to its lower density. Studies were carried out on Magnesium alloys and Titanium alloys which have proven mechanical properties. To evaluate the corrosion properties, electro chemical polarization test was conducted in 3.5% NaCl Solution. The corrosion behavior of magnesium (Mg-Zn alloy) cast alloy and annealed one was compared with Ti- 6Al-4 V which is widely used as implant material. The corrosion resistance offered by Titanium alloy Ti-6Al −4V is superior to that of Magnesium alloys both in the cast form annealed one.
