Abstract

Atkins streamer and monel metal jaw tags were used to identify 2,269 smallmouth bass in a potamodromous lake population during movements of the fish to riverine spawning grounds. Streamer tags were unsatisfactory for long-term population or life history studies because of poor retention rates and considerable injury to the fish, but were satisfactory for short-term river studies. Jaw tags were suitable for long-term ecological studies, as they had high retention rates and caused little injury to the fish. If reliable growth data are mandatory, however, neither jaw nor streamer tags should be used on smallmouth bass.
