Abstract

The suitability of horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), pupae killed by irradiation or freezing as hosts for Spalangia cameroni (Perkins) was examined. Irradiation at 50 kR completely inhibited eclosion of adult horn flies; they were initially as suitable as live horn fly pupae as hosts for S. cameroni . However, suitability declined if irradiated pupae were stored >2 wk at 5°C. Freeze-killed horn fly pupae consistently produced fewer S. cameroni than live pupae, but frozen pupae could be stored for extended periods without a further decline in suitability. Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) reproduced as well on freeze-killed horn fly pupae as it did on live or irradiated pupae.
