Abstract
In this paper, suitability of 1D defect binary and ternary PBG (Photonic Band Gap) structures are tested for use in electrically tunable optical filters. It is found that 1D defect ternary PBG structures are highly sensitive to refractive index change in defect layers. So, a very small change in refractive index of defect layer via electro-optic effect can induce a large output transmission spectrum shift. Thus, fast electrically tunable optical filters can be fabricated by using 1D defect ternary PBG structures.
