Abstract

TANNER, Vojnovick and Van Lanen (1949) reported that a fermentation method for the commercial preparation of riboflavin either in concentrate or pure form might be based upon the use of the microorganism, Ashbya gossypii. As outlined by Pridham, Hall and Pfeifer (1950) Ashbya gossypii has certain practical advantages favoring it for riboflavin production.Experimental feeding of the Ashbya gossypii concentrate to chickens was undertaken to determine the availability of the riboflavin, the absence of toxic factors, and the presence of any supplemental nutritional factors for chicks.PROCEDUREDay-old Rhode Island Red chicks produced by hens fed a standard breeder ration were divided into groups of equal average weight and placed in electrically heated batteries. Twenty chicks per group were used in series 1, and 25 chicks were used in series 2. They were fed the test diets ad libitum from 1 day of age until the termination of the experiment .
