Abstract

In this paper, "South Africa and the World — Economic Recovery of 1975-77", the author, who is Senior Vice–President of the South African Reserve Bank, deals with the phenomenon of trade cycles by looking at the 1973-75 recession and the following cyclic recovery of the big industrial countries, and then discusses it's effects on South Africa. Economic indicators confirm that South Africa, for the time being, still finds itself in a recessionary phase. However, the present world economic recovery must have a favourable impact on South Africa's internal economy. Nevertheless, a difficult period of adjustment for South Africa confronts us and this fact has significant monetary and fiscal policy implications.
