Abstract

A collection of 15 patients who attempted to commit suicide with a gun, but survived, is presented. The patients were seen in nine oral surgery clinics in Sweden during a 10-year period. Records and radiographs revealed the following (1) the age of the patients ranged from 18 to 83 years (mean value: 45 years), (2) all were males, (3) rifles were the most common type of gun (10 out of 15), (4) rifles caused the most severe injuries, (5) treatment was comprehensive and required teamwork including oral surgeons, psychiatrists, plastic sur-geons and prosthodontists, (6) four out of 15 patients (26.7 %) committed suicide on a later occasion, and (7) because of the difficulty in aiming the weapon, the lower part of the face was commonly damaged (in 9 out of 15 patients only the mandible was fractured).
