Abstract
Understanding and empathy for a patient's condition can take on a quantum leap of meaning when the physician is fighting the same battle. Sufyan Hussain has contended with type 1 diabetes for more than 30 years. He is also a consultant physician in diabetes and endocrinology, as well as an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, UK. A native of Karachi, Pakistan, he was just ten years old when he received the troubling news that he had type 1 diabetes.
