Abstract
To highlight the meaning of Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), I ask the readers to accompany me through the MECC experience. MECC recognizes that suffering is a universal human experience, irrespective of ethnic or religious boundaries. Thus, the management of suffering may provide a hostility-torn world with a common goal. The management of suffering involves the development of compassion, which is a universal language, accessible to individuals who are unable to understand each other’s idioms, as there is more to a language than the spoken word. Thus, MECC is a laboratory of compassion with the mission to bring peace by privileging the healing of the patient over the cure of the disease. The war-torn Middle East represents the ideal ground for testing the viability of the MECC mission. Although MECC does not endorse any specific religion, MECC supports the religious hypothesis as it holds compassion to be a transcendent experience.
