Abstract

*Editor’s note: Ms Gately first began volunteering in the late 1980s in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion of that nation. Since then, she has returned to Afghanistan for 6 months with the organization Doctors Without Borders, volunteered at refugee camps in Kenya, the Balkans, and Iraq, and has now made 2 trips to Darfur. For the past 4 years, Gately has been on aid missions more than she has been at home, so she currently works per diem at Boston Medical Center to have the flexibility she needs to perform her volunteer work. While in Darfur, Ms Gately developed a Web series for the BBC, which was picked up by others, and she was asked to contribute to a book on refugees that is scheduled for publication later this year. In discussing her volunteer role, Gately explains, ‘‘No direct nursing care is involved, although my most fulfilling moments are when I am able to spend time with and hold the children and babies.’’
