Abstract

To report the first successful medical treatment of ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior without associated surgical treatment. Interventional case report. The patient is an 11-year-old boy with panuveitis and neuroretinitis associated with a pathognomonic presentation of ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior in which the larva could not be identified. The patient received medical treatment with a single oral dose of ivermectin of 200 mg/kg followed by systemic steroid therapy without associated surgical extraction of the larva via pars plana vitrectomy or laser photocoagulation. Anterior and posterior uveitis resolution, reversal of neuroretinitis, and visual acuity improvement. Medical treatment with ivermectin can be considered as primary therapeutic modality in ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior.
