Abstract

Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) is the most common Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) in critically ill patients (intensive care unit and step-down unit) and impact on morbidity, length of stay, and costs are high. Zero Tolerance approach has been implemented in the hospital since 2007 and a prevention program to reduce CAUTI rate, in a 38-bed intensive care and 90-bed step-down unit of a private hospital in Brazil, initiated in 2008. The Infection Control Service (ICS) and the unit team used a quality tool—PDCA circle to analyze the causes and implemented interventions.
