Abstract

When digested sludge is dewatered for recycling to agricultural land or incinerated the centrate/filtrate liquors present considerable ammonia loads on the receiving sewage treatment plants which can compromise effluent standards. As an alternative to mainstream treatment at the sewage works sidestream treatments have been evaluated. At two incinerator sites sidestream ASPs processes have been chosen, and the outcome of modelling, laboratory studies and pilot plant operation are discussed, along with the design of the two plants and full scale performance.
