Abstract
MASSIVE AIR EMBOLISM during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a rare but lethal complication. Permanent neurologic injury or prolonged recovery is common in survivors. The patient can be saved completely from complications if immediate corrective measures are taken. The authors report an instance of massive arterial air embolism during CPB in a 10-year-old child caused by sudden emptying of the venous reservoir. Immediate treatment of the air embolism with hypothermic retrograde cerebral perfusion resulted in complete recovery with no residual neurologic sequelae.
