Abstract

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when I was in my late 20s, although I had been experiencing symptoms since my early 20s. I had recurring bouts of diarrhoea that would last for a week or more, with no apparent cause, accompanied by abdominal pain that was moderately debilitating rather than acute. After explaining my symptoms to my GP I had a number of tests and provided stool samples, but no diagnosis was forthcoming until I came under the care of Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, UK, where my consultant gastroenterologist finally decided that I had ulcerative colitis. I was prescribed sulfasalazine 500 mg tablets (two, three times a day), and I'm glad to say they were very effective in controlling my symptoms.
