Abstract

This paper traces the evolution of India-Nepal electricity interconnection over the years. The power system scenario of India and Nepal is also analyzed. The authors describe the governance framework at policy and regulatory level for facilitating cross border transactions between India and Nepal The key aspects for ensuring the reliability and security of the interconnection such as frequency standards, voltage standards, defence mechanism, protection, real time data availability, metering, transfer capability assessment and other challenges have been outlined. The operational experience of the synchronous operation of the India-Nepal interconnection is also examined in the paper. The authors conclude with the benefits accrued due to cross-border interconnection and explore the future opportunities.
