Abstract

This chapter explains how a focus on the sociology of suicide can usefully inform discussion about the role of youth work in suicide prevention. It outlines the origins and development of a coordinated government approach to suicide prevention adopted by the Australian government between the mid-1990s and still current in 2014 and discusses the youth work contribution to the initiative. The chapter contends that youth work has a vitally important role to play in prevention of youth suicide but that, for success to be realized, it is essential that other professions understand and facilitate what youth workers can achieve. Youth suicide prevention strategy in Australia seeks to adopt a two-pronged approach by addressing social and environmental factors that contribute to risk as well as interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that support wellbeing. The review on youth work and suicide prevention strategies showed that the Australian initiative achieved a high level of success because it coordinated a multi-faceted response.
