Abstract

The production of positively charged kaons in proton-nucleus reactions is analysed with respect to primary nucleon-nucleon and two-step proton-nucleon→pion plus pion-nucleon production processes on the basis of Hartree-Fock ground state momentum distributions and free on-shell production processes. Clear evidence is found for the dominance of secondary processes πN→ ΛK + below 1 GeV. Estimates for the production of hypernuclei in p+ 12C and p+U reactions up to 1 GeV are given.
