Abstract

In recent times, the word cult has taken on a pejorative undertones. Cults are looked upon with suspicion due to their eccentric rituals and practices. One such cult which proved to have a violent agenda was Aum Shinrikyo of Japan. The aim of this paper is to throw light on this cult, its weapons of mass destruction program, its charismatic but nefarious leader Shoko Asahar and his goal of becoming the emperor of Japan. This cult's activities left Japanese society reeling in shock, especially after the deadly Sarin Gas Attack, however, it was the political and cultural environment of Japan itself which indirectly helped nurture Aum Shinrikyo.
