Abstract

Bathymetric and magnetic data along seven ENE-WSW and seventeen NNW-SSE and N-S profiles collected on the southwestern continental shelf of India between Coondapoor and Kasaragod within water depths of 20–2000 m are studied. Model studies of magnetic data suggest that the depth to the top of the basement in the study area varies from 1.0 to 4.0 km and provide evidence for the occurrence of a graben below the inner shelf and basement ridge below the mid-shelf. It is also suggested that the inferred basement ridge below the mid-shelf is of continental type and Precambrian in age.
