Abstract

1. 1. The effect of chitin and bacterial cell-wall oligosaccharides on hen's egg-white lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17) solutions containing a monomer-dimer equilibrium mixture was studied. 2. 2. The apparent weight-average molecular weight of the enzyme did not show a significant change when N-acetylglucosamine, di- N-acetylchitobiose, tri- N-acetylchitotriose or the bacterial cell-wall disaccharide N-acetylglucosaminyl- N-acetylmuramic acid (GlcNAc-MurNAc) were present. 3. 3. Tetra- N-acetylchitotetraose, penta- N-acetylchitopentaose and the bacterial cell-wall tetrasaccharide (GlcNAc-MurNAc GlcNAc-MurNAc) reduced the M w,app of lysozyme in the solution. 4. 4. The difference in the action of the two groups of saccharides is interpreted by different distribution of lysozyme-saccharide complexes. 5. 5. Lysozyme observed by the electron microscope revealed higher aggregates than those known to be present in solution.
